Chiropractor vs. Physical Therapist: Who Should You See?
The short answer: for most musculoskeletal pain — back, neck, shoulder, knee — either can help, and the research shows the biggest difference comes from the approach, not the title. Chiropractors typically emphasize hands-on joint and soft-tissue treatment; physical therapists typically emphasize progressive exercise rehabilitation. Many modern sports-rehab clinics — including Pure Kinetics here in Fort Lauderdale — intentionally combine both: hands-on care to reduce pain and restore motion, then structured exercise to rebuild capacity so the problem is less likely to return.
When a chiropractic-led approach tends to fit
- Your main complaint is joint stiffness, restricted motion, or acute back or neck pain
- You want hands-on treatment (adjustment/manipulation, soft-tissue work) as part of care
- You've had a flare-up of a recurring issue and want it settled quickly
When a rehab/exercise-led approach tends to fit
- You're returning from an injury or surgery and need to rebuild strength step by step
- Your pain shows up mainly during activity (running, lifting, sport)
- Previous "passive-only" care felt good briefly but didn't last
Why we don't make you choose
Dr. Blake Pennock is a chiropractor (DC) and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS). A typical plan at Pure Kinetics blends the two models: hands-on care — spinal manipulation, dry needling, IASTM, cupping, myofascial release, shockwave therapy or TECAR therapy where appropriate — combined with corrective exercise and strength programming that progresses until you're back to full activity. Care plans are individualized after an assessment; no single approach fits every person or condition.
