Dry Needling in Fort Lauderdale

Dry needling uses thin monofilament needles placed into irritable muscle and trigger-point tissue to reduce pain and improve how the muscle functions. At Pure Kinetics in Fort Lauderdale, it's one of the hands-on tools we combine with exercise-based rehab — useful for calming stubborn muscular pain so the strengthening work can do its job.

What we commonly use it for

  • Neck and upper-trap tension, including neck-driven headaches
  • Low back and gluteal muscle pain
  • Tendinopathy support — elbow, hamstring, Achilles, gluteal (shockwave is the other adjunct we reach for here)
  • Calf, quad, and hamstring tightness in runners and lifters
  • Shoulder and scapular muscle pain in overhead athletes

Dry needling vs. acupuncture

The tools look similar; the frameworks differ. Acupuncture comes from traditional Chinese medicine and its meridian system. Dry needling is a Western, anatomy-based technique targeting specific muscles, trigger points, and tissue identified in your exam. Both use fine needles; the reasoning behind where and why is different.

What a session is like

Needling is brief and targeted — typically minutes, not an hour — and folded into a normal treatment visit alongside manual therapy and exercise. You may feel a quick deep ache or muscle twitch at the point; most people describe it as strange rather than painful. Post-session soreness for a day is common, like a worked muscle.

Common questions

Does dry needling actually work? Research support is moderate: reviews show short-term pain reduction for trigger-point-related pain, with the best results when needling is combined with exercise — which is exactly how we use it. It's a useful adjunct, not a standalone cure, and we'll tell you honestly whether your case is a good fit.

Is it safe? In trained hands, adverse events beyond temporary soreness or minor bruising are uncommon. We screen for the situations where needling isn't appropriate and use sterile single-use needles, always.

How many sessions? Usually folded into your broader care plan rather than sold as a standalone series — commonly a handful of sessions while the exercise program takes over.
